Why we all need the Y
At the Pike County YMCA, strengthening communities
through youth development, healthy living, and social
responsibility is our cause. Every day, we work
side-by-side with community members to address the most
pressing needs in our county, to make sure that everyone
regardless of age, income, or background has the
opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. Our work is not
easy, but real and lasting changes can only come about
when we work together to invest in our kids, our health,
and our neighbors. The first step to achieving these
improvements is having the full support of our
communities.
In many places, the Y is known as a place to play
basketball, swim or workout, but it’s much more than
that; it’s a place that changes lives. For example, this
story is about two boys who were discovered coming out
of the woods behind the Y one hot summer day. When asked
what they were doing in the woods they explained they
were swimming. It was discovered that they were not
swimming at the Y because they did not have any free
passes left and their family couldn’t afford memberships
for both children. The kids were given youth scholarship
forms to take home to their parents. Upon returning the
boys were given free memberships and were asked to
promise not to go swimming in the creek anymore. We see
those boys swimming, or working out in the youth fitness
center with their old friends and new ones most of the
time when school is out and on weekends.
Stories like this one demonstrate the intrinsic value of
having a Y in Pike County and there are many others who
could benefit greatly from the different services and
programs offered by the Y. This is why we are asking for
your support. Your financial gift will help continue the
important work that the Y does, whether it is providing
kids a safe place to learn and grow or just a safe place
to take a swim. Offering families opportunities to
reconnect and grow together; or providing people of all
backgrounds access to education and training to help
them reach their full potential.
We encourage everyone in the county to join our cause. When
we all pitch in and help our neighbors, we make a
meaningful, enduring impact in the lives of children and
families which ultimately strengthens our community.
